Last-Minute Moving Tips: How to Move Out of State on Short Notice
Updated: 2 days ago

A new job that starts in two weeks. A lease that fell through. A family member who needs you in another state right now. Last-minute moves happen to organized people too, and when the move crosses state lines, the pressure doubles.
The good news is that a short timeline does not have to mean a chaotic move. With the right order of steps, you can get your home packed, loaded and on the road without paying for rushed mistakes. Here are the last-minute moving tips we share with every customer who calls us on short notice.
IN THIS GUIDE 9 steps to move out of state on short notice, in the right order: book, verify, inventory, declutter, pack, and plan both buildings. |
HALLOWEEN WEEK TIP Moving around Halloween? Sidewalks fill with trick-or-treaters on the evening of October 31. Plan your loading earlier in the day and keep walkways clear of decorations. |
1. Book your mover first, before anything else
On a tight timeline, the moving truck is the piece you have the least control over, so lock it in first. Packing, address changes and cleaning can all happen around the date your movers give you.
When you call, have this ready:
Your pickup address and your destination city and state
The date you need to be out, and the latest date you can receive your things
A quick list of your large furniture and an honest guess at how many boxes you will have
Details about both buildings: stairs, elevators, parking and loading rules
MLV TIP At MLV Transportation we can usually book a move with about one week of notice. If you need something sooner, call us anyway and we will tell you honestly what is possible. |
2. Book direct, especially when you are in a hurry
When you are rushed, it is tempting to fill out one online form and take the first quote that calls you back. Many of those calls come from brokers who sell your move to another company. On a short timeline, that extra layer is a real risk: you may not know who is coming to your home until moving day, and there is little time to fix a problem.
MLV TIP Before you pay a deposit, ask one simple question: "Are you the moving company that will handle my move, or will you pass it to another company?" Then check the company's USDOT and MC numbers on the FMCSA website. It takes two minutes and can save you from the worst last-minute surprise. You can read more in our guide to booking with a moving company instead of a broker. |
3. Make your inventory complete, even if it is rough
Most price changes on moving day happen for one reason: the move is bigger than the move that was quoted. When you are in a hurry, it is easy to forget the garage, the basement, the storage unit or the patio furniture.
Walk through your home once, room by room, and write everything down. It does not need to be perfect. A complete rough list beats a neat list that leaves out half the basement. If something changes after you get your estimate, call your mover right away so the price can be updated before moving day, not during it.
4. Declutter fast, not perfectly
You do not have time to sort every drawer, and that is fine. Use a fast rule: if you would not buy it again for your new home, do not pay to move it across state lines. Focus on the big wins:
Old furniture that will not fit the new space
Exercise equipment you do not use
Duplicate kitchen items, old electronics and cables
Paint, chemicals and anything flammable, which movers cannot transport anyway
MLV TIP Every item you leave behind is less weight on the truck and less time on moving day. |
5. Pack in the right order
Start with the rooms you use the least: guest rooms, storage areas, books, decorations and out-of-season clothes. Leave the kitchen, bathroom and bedroom essentials for the last day or two.
If you do not have time to pack, consider professional packing for part or all of your home. MLV offers full packing service and sells packing supplies, including boxes, tape and bubble wrap, so you do not lose a day driving around looking for boxes.
6. Pack a "first 72 hours" bag
On a long distance move, your shipment may arrive days after you do. Pack a bag or suitcase that travels with you, not on the truck:
IDs, passports, lease or closing documents and your moving paperwork
Medications and glasses
Phone and laptop chargers
Two or three changes of clothes
Basic toiletries, a towel and bedding for the first night
Snacks, water and a few kitchen basics
Jewelry, cash and anything you could not replace
7. Handle the paperwork in one sitting
Block one hour and get it all done at once:
Change your address with USPS and your bank
Schedule utilities to stop at the old home and start at the new one
Notify your employer, insurance and subscriptions
Check your new state's rules and deadlines for your driver's license and vehicle registration
8. Plan both buildings now
Apartments and condos often require you to reserve the elevator and loading dock, and some ask for a certificate of insurance from your mover. These requests take time, so contact both building managers as soon as your date is set and share their requirements with your mover.
9. Keep your date flexible if you can
If your move-out and move-in dates do not line up, storage can take the pressure off. Your belongings stay safe until your new home is ready, and you avoid paying for a rushed second move. Just remember that at MLV, cancellations or date changes need 72 hours notice, so confirm your plans as early as you can.
Did your mover cancel on you?
If your mover or broker cancelled at the last minute, our guide on what to do when your mover cancels walks you through the first 24 hours, step by step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How fast can I book a long distance move?
MLV can usually book with about one week of notice. Availability changes by date and season, so call us as soon as you know you are moving.
Is a last-minute move more expensive?
The price depends on distance, the size of your shipment and the services you need. What makes last-minute moves expensive is usually what gets missed in a rush, like an incomplete inventory or access problems at the building. A complete inventory protects your price.
Can you pack for me if I run out of time?
Yes. We offer full packing service and packing supplies.
What if my new home is not ready?
We offer storage for customers who need time between move out and move in.
