Ohio is one of the strongest routes out of Chicago. Columbus keeps growing, Cleveland and Cincinnati offer big-city amenities with a lower cost of living than Chicago in many neighborhoods, and Toledo and Dayton attract families and workers from across the Midwest.
If you are planning a move from Chicago to Ohio, here is what to know before you book.

Distances from Chicago
Approximate driving distances:
Toledo: about 245 miles
Cincinnati: about 295 miles
Dayton: about 285 miles
Cleveland: about 345 miles
Columbus: about 355 miles
Most routes use I-90/I-80 toward Toledo and Cleveland, or I-65 and I-70/I-74 toward Columbus, Dayton and Cincinnati. Distance is one of the main factors in your price, together with the size of your shipment and any extra services.
Remember the time zone
Ohio is on Eastern Time, one hour ahead of Chicago. When you confirm delivery windows, elevator reservations and building move-in hours, make sure everyone is talking about the same local time.
Planning your Ohio move
Book early. Summer and end-of-month dates are the busiest. MLV can often book with about one week of notice, but more notice gives you more options.
Make a complete inventory. Go room by room, including the garage, basement and storage unit. An accurate list is the best way to keep your price from changing on moving day.
Check access at both homes. Stairs, elevators, long walks from the truck and parking all affect the estimate.
Ask about building rules. Many apartments and condos require elevator reservations and a certificate of insurance from the mover.
Packing tips for a 300-mile move
Use sturdy boxes and tape them well. Boxes on a long route take more vibration than on a local move.
Pack heavy items in small boxes and light items in large boxes.
Wrap furniture in moving pads, and keep small hardware in labeled bags taped to the furniture it belongs to.
Label boxes on two sides with the room and contents.
Keep an essentials bag with you: documents, medications, chargers, clothes and basic toiletries.
If you are short on time, MLV offers full packing service and sells packing supplies, including boxes, tape and bubble wrap.
Moving for work
Many Chicago to Ohio moves are job relocations. If your employer is helping with moving costs, ask early what documents they need from your mover, such as a written estimate or an itemized invoice. If you start work before your new home is ready, storage can bridge the gap. See how storage fits into a move on our Home Relocation page.
Check your mover before you book
Every company that moves household goods across state lines must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). Look up the USDOT number of any mover you are considering. MLV Transportation is FMCSA licensed and insured: USDOT 4429331, MC 1742575.
Also make sure you know whether you are talking to the moving company itself or a broker who will sell your move to someone else. Our guide to moving brokers vs. moving companies explains the difference.
