Michigan is close enough to Chicago that many people think of it as a "local" move. It is not. As soon as your belongings cross the state line, your move becomes an interstate move, regulated by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). That changes who can legally move you and what protections you have.

Here is what you need to know about moving from Chicago to Michigan, whether you are heading to Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing, Ann Arbor or a lake town on the west coast of the state.

IN THIS GUIDE

Moving from Chicago to Detroit, Grand Rapids, Lansing or Ann Arbor? Distances, winter tips, time zones and why booking a direct interstate mover matters.

WINTER MOVING TIP

Snow and ice can arrive early in Michigan. Clear and salt walkways at both homes the day before your move, and keep a parking spot open near the door.

How far is Chicago from Michigan's main cities?

Approximate driving distances from Chicago:

  • Grand Rapids: about 180 miles

  • Kalamazoo: about 145 miles

  • Lansing: about 220 miles

  • Ann Arbor: about 240 miles

  • Detroit: about 280 miles

Most of these routes follow I-94 and I-196. Many Michigan moves can be loaded and delivered in a short time frame, but distance, the size of your shipment and access at both homes all affect the schedule and the price.

Remember the time zone change

Chicago is on Central Time. Almost all of Michigan is on Eastern Time, one hour ahead. It sounds small, but it matters on moving day. If your building in Michigan only allows moves until 5:00 pm, that is 4:00 pm Chicago time. Confirm delivery windows in local time with your mover and your new building.

Moving to Michigan in winter

Michigan winters can be tougher than Chicago's, especially near Lake Michigan where lake-effect snow is common. If you are moving between November and March:

  • Keep your dates a little flexible and watch the forecast the week of your move.

  • Clear sidewalks, driveways and steps at both homes before the crew arrives.

  • Protect your floors from snow and salt with mats or cardboard at the entrances.

  • Pack a winter kit for the drive: blanket, water, snacks, phone charger and an ice scraper.

Why a short interstate move still needs a licensed interstate mover

Because Michigan is close, some people hire a local company or a friend with a truck. Before you do, check one thing: any company that moves your household goods across state lines for hire must be registered with FMCSA and have a USDOT number and operating authority for household goods.

Interstate movers must also give you the FMCSA booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move," follow federal rules for estimates, and offer liability protection for your belongings. You can verify any mover on the FMCSA website before you book. MLV Transportation is FMCSA licensed and insured for interstate household goods moves: USDOT 4429331, MC 1742575.

Tips for a smooth Chicago to Michigan move

  • Get a complete inventory. Short moves are still priced on what you move, so include the garage, basement and storage unit.

  • Plan parking at both ends. Chicago streets and Michigan downtowns can both be tight for large trucks. Ask your building about loading zones and elevator reservations.

  • Ask about certificates of insurance. Many apartments and condos require one from the mover.

  • Use packing service if time is short. MLV offers full packing service and packing supplies.

  • Consider storage if your Michigan home is not ready on move-out day.
