Milwaukee is only about 90 miles from Chicago, and many people make the trip for work, family or a lower cost of living. Madison, Green Bay and the rest of Wisconsin are popular too. Because the distance is short, this move is easy to underestimate. It is still an interstate move, and it deserves the same planning as any long distance move.

Here is what to know before you book a move from Chicago to Wisconsin.

IN THIS GUIDE

Moving from Chicago to Milwaukee, Madison or Green Bay? Distances, winter tips, building rules and why a short move to Wisconsin still needs an interstate mover.

WINTER MOVING TIP

In winter, lay down mats at both entrances and keep electronics and plants with you in a warm car, not in the cold.

Distances from Chicago

Approximate driving distances:

  • Kenosha: about 60 miles

  • Milwaukee: about 90 miles

  • Madison: about 150 miles

  • Green Bay: about 210 miles

Most of these routes run along I-94 and I-90. Traffic on the Chicago end can add real time to moving day, especially on weekdays, so plan your pickup window with that in mind.

A short distance is still an interstate move

When your belongings cross from Illinois into Wisconsin, the move falls under federal rules set by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). That means:

  • The company moving you must be registered with FMCSA for household goods, with a USDOT number and operating authority.

  • You should receive the FMCSA booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move."

  • Estimates and liability protection follow federal rules.

Before you hire anyone, look up their USDOT number on the FMCSA website. MLV Transportation is FMCSA licensed and insured: USDOT 4429331, MC 1742575.

Moving to Wisconsin in winter

Wisconsin winters are long and cold, and snow can arrive early. If you are moving between November and March:

  • Watch the forecast and keep a little flexibility in your dates.

  • Clear snow and ice from walkways, steps and driveways at both homes before the crew arrives.

  • Protect your floors with mats or cardboard at the entrances.

  • Keep electronics and anything sensitive to cold in the warm car with you if you can.

Plan the buildings at both ends

Milwaukee has many apartments, condos and older homes with narrow staircases. Chicago has its own challenges with street parking and building rules. Before moving day:

  • Ask both buildings about elevator reservations and move-in hours.

  • Ask whether a certificate of insurance is required from your mover.

  • Check where a large truck can park and how far it is to your door. Long carries and stairs affect your estimate.

Make the most of a short move

A shorter route gives you some advantages:

  • Easier scheduling. Pickup and delivery can often be planned close together.

  • More flexibility with storage. If your Wisconsin home is not ready, storage can bridge the gap.

  • Fewer things to pack for the road. You still need an essentials bag, but you will likely be reunited with your belongings soon.

Use that flexibility well: declutter before the move, make a complete inventory and book your date as early as you can. MLV can often book with about one week of notice, but popular dates fill up.
